The Department of Transportation requires gas cylinders undergo a re-certification process every few years. With cylinders under high pressure it is important to make sure they are safe to use. Depending on the cylinder testing is required every 3, 5, or 10 years.
Using state of the art hydrostatic testing equipment Smokey’s Fire Protection, in Lancaster PA, is able to provide you with accurate testing for your cylinder re-certification needs. All testing is done in house with equipment capable of testing cylinders up to 10000 PSI.
After a passing visual inspection the cylinder will be filled with water and placed into a water jacket. Pressure will be built up within the cylinder typically to 5/3 working pressure and held there for around 30 seconds before pressure is released. Measuring water displacement before and after this process to determine a pass or fail based on cylinder expansion.
